The weight of a gemstone is measured in "carats," or "ct.," a unit of measurement used in trading since antiquity. The phrase is Greek in origin and means "carob seed," a unit of measurement for weighing gemstones.
A carat weighs exactly 0.2 grams, or 1/5 of a gram.
Therefore, it is logical to assume that the price of the gemstone would increase as the number of carats increases. Though not always the truth!
Let's have a look!
Which of these two rings is more expensive in your opinion?
A. The solitaire ring featuring a rubellite of 6 carats.
B. The 1.5 carats total weight of 4 rubellites in the ring
Due to their rarity and restricted supply compared to small-sized gemstones, a single one-carat gemstone of equal quality is worth substantially more than other smaller gemstones. If we use stones of the same quality, we may state the following:
"The carat weight of an individual gemstone increases together with the size of its crystal and therefore its rarity"
A gemstone's price is always presented as a cost per carat:
Cost per carat = total cost of the gemstone / weight in carats
The price of a gemstone per carat does not climb linearly with the weight of the gemstone; rather, it typically increases exponentially with increasing carat weight.
Although this is a simplification since it mostly relies on the cut, cut gemstone sizes are often proportionate to their carat weight. When compared to a gemstone cut with a broader counter, a thick gemstone or a gemstone with a very high pavilion may look smaller.
Additionally, it is important to note that different mineralogical species can cause gemstones of the same weight to have different sizes. In actuality, a two carat emerald will be bigger than a rubellite of the same weight. It is because, corundum or rubellite have a greater density than beryl or emerald.
