Cut Shape and Style for Gemstones

The term "cut" frequently raises questions since it combines numerous meanings:

  1. The shape of the gemstone (pair, round, princess, square, etc.)

  2. The type of cut (cabochon, faceted, brilliant or stepped)

  3. The quality of the cutter's work (based on proportions, symmetry and the so-called "polishing")

The shape and cut of a diamond are frequently chosen first when making a purchase, however with colored gemstones, the color is the more important consideration.

It may be necessary to accept several cuts if you're looking for a "pigeon blood" ruby because it is quite tough to discover an exceptional ruby with the specific cut you have in mind. Color is unquestionably more significant in the assessment.

Most gemstones, including sapphires and rubies, have an oval or cushion shape. The cutter can extract more value from the raw material due to these two shapes. Smaller gemstones, however, are often cut in a round or emerald shape.

Actually, emerald cut is a stepped octagonal cut, but because this is a common technique to cut emeralds, it was given the name as emerald cut. Because the mineral from which emerald is mined has a habitus or cylindrical hexagonal appearance, greater raw material is extracted by an emerald cut.

Traditional Cut

The higher the rarity and worth of a gemstone, the greater the attention the cutter will pay to extracting the greatest weight from raw material; frequently, this occurs at the price of gemstone symmetry and cut quality.

Calibrated cuts, or accurate size cuts, are done on less expensive and lower grade gemstones. They are then employed in mass-produced and repetitive jewelry designs.

The shape of the raw minerals dictates the cut and size of the finest gemstones.

Colored gemstones' cut style is frequently characterized as mixed in gemmological certifications since it does not entirely adhere to the norms of a style.

The type of cut has little effect on the price of a colored gemstone, yet the market might raise prices depending on demand.

Price is influenced by cut quality, which ranges from bad to good.
